NEW SHOP HOURS

We have decided that we need more time to attend to our family needs and to enable this we have chosen to close the shop on Mondays.

The new shop hours are:

Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. Other times can be arranged in advance, for those desperate to buy some games.

SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE EASY TO PLAY FAMILY GAMES

During the cold, snowy winter weather why not entertain the family with great board and card games. Here are some of our favourite easy to learn and play games:

For Sale is an excellent card game in which you bid and bluff your way to purchase the most valuable properties for the lowest amount of money, then turn around and sell those properties for cold hard cash.

Loot is a card game where you play pirates collecting treasure and handles up to 8 players.

10 Days in Africa is a board game where you are trying to be the first to chart your course through Africa from start to finish using destination and transportation tiles. Also in the series are 10 days in the USA, 10 Days in Europe and 10 Days in Asia.

Alhambra is a game where you buy and place building tiles in order to build the most splendorous Alhambra and be crowned the winner.

Qwirkle, the German Game of the Year 2011, is an easy to learn game where you build up rows and columns of matching colours or shapes.

Sounds Like a Plan is a favourite at our children’s games club. In this game you select a card containing a piece of advice that best fits the judge's chosen activity. You might have to give out bad advice, a kid’s advice, your grandma's advice, or even advice from a psychic!

Ticket to Ride is a board game in which players collect train cards that enable them to claim railway routes connecting cities throughout North America.

Set is a multi-award winning card game (12 best game awards!) that will help teach children and adults to think outside the square.

Zeus on the Loose is a really fun family game that reinforces maths skills and strategic thinking.

Quiddler is a word making card game where you score points for the letters in the words you make, for having the most words and the longest word in each round.

New Games

7 Wonders Leaders7 Wonders - Leaders - $52.90. Expansion for 7 Wonders - Kennerspiel des Jahres winner 2011.

For 2-7 players, ages 10 and up and plays in about 40 minutes.

7 Wonders: Leaders adds 40 new cards to the base game of 7 Wonders, comprising three new guilds, one new wonder card, and 36 white "Leader" cards. At the start of the game, each player takes a hand of four leaders and may play one at the start of each of the three Ages. Unlike the standard cards, leaders cost money (not resources). The expansion comes with a new Wonder - the ancient city of Rome - and contains 6-gold tokens made of cardboard for more efficient money-management.

PergamonPergamon - $69.90. For 2-4 players, ages 10 and up and plays in about 45 minutes. Pergamon is a tactical collecting game with a theme based on excavating archaeological discoveries and managing their exhibition.

Set in the year 1878, the first excavations in what is now modern Turkey are uncovering the remains of ancient Pergamon. Soon the precious discoveries will make their way abroad to public exhibitions before a waiting audience, eliciting substantial honor and glory.

The players attempt to gain federal research grants to cover the costs of their excavations through a bidding mechanism. Whoever is modest and less demanding can travel to the excavating areas before his or her competitors, and the rule is first come, first dig. Only fragments will remain for the later expeditions. Recovered treasures are placed in valuable exhibitions, for which the discoverer receives glory and recognition.

The player who accumulates the most glory after 12 rounds wins the game.

The combination of soliciting funds and racing for the best locations to excavate makes Pergamon a variable game with rules that are easily accessible. Players are forced to make choices based on the money they can obtain and the sequence in which they choose where to dig.

Contents

  • 1 game board
  • 4 wooden meeples
  • 1 wooden tomb raider
  • 24 money cards
  • 24 exhibition marker
  • 60 tiles with discoveries
  • 40 coins
  • 36 victory point markers

A la CarteA la Carte - $94.90. For 2-4 players, ages 8 and up and plays in about 30 minutes. In one of his sillier games, Karl-Heinz Schmiel casts the players as semi-psychotic cooks attempting to hone their culinary skills. Each player receives a miniature pan and a hotplate. Then each turn you can either attempt to turn up the heat, season your dish, or attempt to steal another cook's recipe in the making. Heating your hotplate is a random affair with a die, and could raise the heat on everyone's plate. Spicing the dish is the heart of the game and done by up-ending small bottles filled with little colored wood pellets. When the pellets tumble out of the bottle (sometimes, if they do), the number of pellets can't exceed two, because over-spicing the dish ruins it and you have to throw it in the trash!
