Wellycon

We managed to get along to the Wellington BoardGames Convention on Sunday 5th June and enjoyed helping out with the Family/Children’s Games event. Froggy Boogie and Make ‘n’ Break were popular with the children and parents that we played with. Pitch Car had plenty of people trying their flicking skills to get the race cars around the track and The Adventurers was also enjoyed by the daring group who entered the temple and outran the rolling boulder.

Our thanks go to Andrew Rae and the other volunteers for organising this annual Boardgaming event which just keeps on getting bigger and better.

Children’s Chess Tournament

The All Aboard South Wairarapa District Schools Chess Tournament was successfully held last Friday 10th June. This year we had a nail biting finish with several teams still in contention, in the last round, for top honours.

Our thanks go out to the volunteers who helped out on the day, the teachers/parent help who kept their school’s children under control and to all of the 112 children who worked hard while playing, enjoyed themselves and behaved wonderfully all day.

BOARD GAMES EVENING at the PUB

Our next Games Night will be on Thursday 16th June at the Royal Hotel. We will be in the Dining Room from 6.30pm for a meal and then start playing games from 7.00pm and then continue until about 10.30 – 11.00ish..

We had a great turnout at the last Games Night with over 20 people attending but we did not get to play Caylus as planned - too many other exciting games to play. There will be plenty of games available to try out or bring your own favourite games. People are friendly and welcoming and willing to help with rules. Come along and join the fun. All Welcome!

New Games

The Secret of Monte Cristo - Box cover The Secret of Monte Cristo $94.90. 2 to 4 players, ages 8+ and plays in 60 minutes. In the Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo, the protagonist, Edmond Dantès, is imprisoned in the Chateau d'If for fourteen years, during which time he learns about a fortune hidden on the island of Monte Cristo. Eventually he escapes, boards a smuggling ship, then makes his way to the island, where he manages to recover the fortune.

But did he find all of value on the island? That's not what designers Arnaud Urbon and Charles Chevallier propose in The Secret of Monte Cristo, coming from Z-Man Games in English.

The players are smugglers who learned of the treasure from Dantès while traveling together, and now each of them has decided to search the island for any treasure that might remain. Each round players receive cards that show what type of treasure (gems) might be found in the castle, with the active player that round placing three smugglers in the castle and all other players placing one.

The Secret of Monte Cristo - MarblesOnce new treaure has been distributed in the castle rooms, players then take actions based on the order of the marbles showing in the game's "action slide" – this being a tilted rack with four slots in it, with a different action associated with each slot. The player whose marble is at the bottom of slot one takes that action, then places the marble at the top of any other slot; then the player at the bottom of slot two takes that action; and so forth.

Players can seize treasure from rooms if they outnumber the other smugglers present and they have the right sacks on hand for storing the treasure.

Pastiche - Box CoverPastiche $89.90. Suitable for ages 10 years and over, for 2 - 4 players. Playing time 40 minutes. In this Mensa Select winner from 2011 a World of Beautiful Colours comes alive as players choose commission cards picturing 34 of the finest European art works of the past six centuries. Players score their commissions by mixing primary colours through clever tile placement, and recreating the palette of colours used by the masters who created these works.

While placing hexagonal pieces to gain palette (colour) cards, players become familiar with the different colour combinations that produce the many hues of an artist’s palette... all listed on the Player Reference Card. Players also learn to recognize many great artists and their works as they complete commissions.

Botswana $47.90. Suitable for ages 8 years and over, for 2 - 5 players. Playing time 30 minutes. On safari in Botswana, you might be able to spot lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and zebras. In this game, you will spot them for sure!

But can you guess which ones will be worth the most at the end of this safari? Play the right cards at the right time, collect the best animals, score the most points and win the game.

Pirate Fluxx - Box CoverPirate Fluxx $27.90. Suitable for ages 8 years and over, for 2 - 6 players. Playing time 15 minutes.

Yarr! Grab yer Cutlass! Pirates have taken over Fluxx, the ever-changing card game, and their rules be new and strange.

Fluxx with a pirate twist. Getting the Captain's Hat allows you to have a good bit of control, but watch out for Scurvy and Shackles, which will keep you from winning. Grab lots of Booty keepers, maybe some Ships, and expect a few new Surprise cards along the way.

Egizia $89.90.  Sutiable for ages 12 years and over, for 2 - 4 players. Playing time 75 minutes.

Return to Ancient Egypt. Gather resources, manage your workers and build monuments and wonders along the Nile.

In Egizia, the twist on the worker placement mechanic is that the players must place their pawns following the course of the Nile, moving northwards (from the top to the bottom of the board, that is seen from the Mediterranean Sea). In this way, each placement not only blocks the opponents from choosing the same square (except monuments, where multiple players are always allowed), but also forces the player to place his remaining pawns only on the squares below the one he just occupied (note that "pawns" are placed, since "workers" are one of the resources of the game, like grain and stones).
