Toy Fair 2011

Last weekend our family travelled to Hamilton to visit this year's Toy Fair. We had a lovely time in Hamilton and enjoyed meeting up with many of our suppliers.

Tim from Pixelpark was there with a selection of his wonderful European games and we had the chance to see some of the new games. We will definitely be getting Click Clack in store next month.

We played a number of games with Paul from Dr Wood and they have some great new games coming in August. Brigitta and Andrew from IQ Ideas were there demonstrating Happy Sheep, a game designed by Minty Hunter and Rebekkah Farr of Carterton. Their other game 5 Men Standing (the official Rugby World Cup game) is proving to be very popular and a great game to play while following the World cup this year. We would recommend ordering the game asap as almost everyone who sees it wants a copy - an easy to play game with lots of fun for the whole family.

We spotted 3D jigsaw puzzles at the Toy Fair and they should be arriving next month. Also a fabulous new product called Whipple which is an inedible icing with a set of play

cupcakes, tarts etc which children (and possibly the odd adult)  will enjoy decorating with the icing bag of whipple. It looks like cream or icing and sets hard in 2-3 days. Also included in the sets are decorations and sprinkles to add more gloriousness to the cakes and tarts. I can't wait for them to arrive.

Logical Toys who import the Smart Games have lots of new puzzles arriving later in the year and we had lots of fun testing our patience and skills. There were lots of other companies with fabulous puzzles, magic sets and toys which will  be arriving at All Aboard later in the year.

5. Games library

The library has grown again this year and there will be more games available to learn and play. This year they are aiming to have more avid gamers available to teach games, so don't worry if you don't know that many games.

This is the place to be.

The Wellycon team is committed to a fun, friendly convention dedicated to board games. Last year the numbers went well over 100, including 10-20 out of towners and they hope to repeat that feat again this year.

BOARD GAMES EVENING at the PUB

Our next Games Night will be on Thursday 19th May at the Royal Hotel. We will be in the Dining Room from 6.30pm for a meal and then start playing games from 7.00pm and then continue until about 10.30 – 11.00ish..

Caylubration II: The Provost Strikes Back - Number 1 Caylus Fan and Podcaster, Ryan Sturm, has decided that May 16 - 22 is Caylus week and if you register and play Caylus during the week, you have a chance of winning a copy of the game. Can someone please bring Caylus to the games night, be prepared to teach and play the game and thus help some worthy gamer get their own copy of Caylus. Check the Caylubration details and “register” on Ryan’s BoardGamegeek Thread.

We had a great turnout at the last Games Night with over 20 people attending. There will be plenty of games available to try out or bring your own favourite games. People are friendly and welcoming and willing to help with rules. Come along and join the fun. All Welcome!

New Games

7 Wonders7 Wonders $94.90. 2 to 7 players, ages 10+ and plays in 30 minutes. This game is in limited supply due to it’s popularity. 7 Wonders lasts three ages. In each age, players receive seven cards from a particular deck, choose one of those cards, then pass the remainder to an adjacent player, as in Fairy Tale or a Magic: the Gathering booster draft. Players reveal their cards simultaneously, paying resources if needed or collecting resources or interacting with other players in various ways. (Players have individual boards with special powers on which to organize their cards, and the boards are double-sided as in Bauza's Ghost Stories.) Each player then chooses another card from the deck they were passed, and the process repeats until players have six cards in play from that age. After three ages, the game ends.

In essence 7 Wonders is a card development game along the lines of Race for the Galaxy or Dominion. Some cards have immediate effects, while others provide bonuses or upgrades later in the game. Some cards provide discounts on future purchases. Some provide military strength to overpower your neighbors and others give nothing but victory points. Unlike Magic or Fairy Tale, however, each card is played immediately after being drafted, so you'll know which cards your neighbor is receiving and how his choices might affect what you've already built up. Cards are passed left-right-left over the three ages, so you need to keep an eye on the neighbors in both directions.

Though the box is listed as being for 3-7 players, there is an official 2-player variant included in the instructions.

Cargo Noir $99.00 . 2 to 5 players, ages 8+ and a playing time of 60 minutes. In Serge Laget's Cargo Noir players represent "families" that traffic in smuggled goods in a 1950s noir setting. Each turn, you'll set sail to various ports where cargo is known to get "lost" for the right price – Hong Kong, Bombay, Rotterdam, New York and more – and you'll make an offer for the goods on display. If another family then offers more in that port, you'll need to up your bid or take your money and slink away to look for goods elsewhere. Stand alone in a port, though, and you'll be able to discretely move the goods from the dock to your personal warehouse. Says Laget in a press release accompanying the game announcement, "Everything in Cargo Noir grew from a core auction mechanism that is simple and trivial to explain – you can only bid up, and the last bidder standing gets the goods."

Once you collect goods, you can trade them in to add more ships to your fleet – allowing you to scout for wares in more locations – purchase Victory Spoils, or take other actions. The more goods you collect, the more valuable they can be. The player with the most Spoils at game end wins.

Trolhalla $89.90. TrollhallaThis one we have been playing and enjoying. 2 to 4 players, Ages 8+ and plays in 60 minutes. It’s time to venture forth and find some fresh sea air! In Trollhalla, you join forces with your fellow trolls to sail the seas in search of islands filled with pillage and plunder. Crunchy livestock, nervous monks, panicked princesses, piles of gold, and casks of grog await you! But watch out for Billy Goats--if you’re not careful they will knock parts of your precious stolen cargo out of your boat!

With so many goodies lying about on these islands, it feels like you’ve died and gone to troll heaven, or perhaps someplace even better -- Trollhalla!'

Lords of Scotland $19.90.  2 to 5 players, ages 12+ and plays in 30minutes. You acquire the support you need to win the game by winning skirmishes against your rivals. A skirmish is five consecutive rounds of play. During each round of a skirmish, you have the opportunity to either build up your army by playing cards from your hand or recruit clans to fight for you by drawing cards from the recruit pile. At the end of the five rounds, each lord gets to claim a supporter in order of highest strength army to lowest. Then you discard all the clans you mustered and begin a new skirmish. The game ends when one lord reaches forty or more points worth of supporters and claims the throne. If you hope to be the one to do so, you will need to know when to commit your forces to battle and when to regroup to fight another day.

The King Commands $27.90. 2 to 6 players, ages 10+ and plays in 30 minutes. Camelot has fallen! King Arthur is dead, Merlin is missing and the castle has been looted. You and your friends are the last remaining knights of the round table and you have decided to duel for the few remaining bags of gold. But as all knights know money is not everything, whoever walks away with the best story is the true winner.

A light and fast card game that usually brings smiles and laughter around the table. The game takes about 5 minutes to learn and soon everybody is attacking everybody, trying to score as many points as possible. Using simple card combinations for attacks and a few special cards with multiple uses the players often have many ways to play their hands, but there is also a lot of luck involved and anyone can win.
